A ZLEV is defined as a passenger car or a commercial van with CO2 emissions between 0 and 50 g/km. The results showed that NO x emissions were on average about seven times higher than the Euro 6 limit. The Euro 6 standard imposes a further, significant reduction in NOx emissions from diesel engines (a 67% reduction compared to Euro 5) and establishes similar standards for petrol and diesel.
A new laboratory test cycle known as WLTP (the Worldwide harmonised Light duty Test Procedure) will apply to all new type approvals and a year later, from 1 September 2018, will apply to all new car registrations. Euro 3 also added a separate NOx limit for diesel engines and introduced separate HC and NOx limits for petrol engines. There are some slight tweaks here and there on updated models such as the Renault Master, where payload dips by a few kilos, but as there are now new, more powerful engines, there are other benefits to offset the change so it isn’t a direct like-for-like comparison. Small vans are able to use a simple NOx trap, while most of the larger van and pickup makers are choosing to use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), which injects a reductant called AdBlue into the exhaust stream to neutralise the nasty NOx.
Stage IV standards are enforced from 2014. Petrol-powered vehicles are exempted from particulate matter (PM) standards through to the Euro 4 stage, but vehicles with direct injection engines are subject to a limit of 0.0045 g/km for Euro 5 and Euro 6. Euro 6-TEMP allows the figures to deviate by 110%, but for full Euro 6d approval, the deviation allowed will be 43%. A spokesperson wasn’t able to say exactly how many of the current vehicle the brand will carry over but stressed that there will be enough stock available to satisfy demand. Along with Emissions standards the European Union has also mandated a number of computer on-board diagnostics for the purposes of increasing safety for drivers. Since the Euro 2 stage, EU regulations introduce different emission limits for diesel and petrol vehicles. The makes the Ducato Euro 6d-TEMP compliant but the update also brings a smooth new automatic gearbox. Petrol-powered vehicles are exempted from particulate matter (PM) standards through to the Euro 4 stage, but vehicles with direct injection engines are subject to a limit of 0.0045 g/km for Euro 5 and Euro 6. The new legislation only applies to new models and only alters the testing that the manufacturers have to put their vehicles through. As of 1 January 2015, EU Member States have to ensure that ships in the Baltic, the North Sea and the English Channel are using fuels with a sulphur content of no more than 0.10%. Manufacturers were building Euro 6 compliant vehicles for some time before the requirements came in for LCVs in 2016, and many have started producing models that comply with Euro 6d-TEMP legislation, even though they don’t have to until September 2020 in a lot of cases. Carmakers that outperform the ZLEV sales targets will be rewarded with higher CO2 emission targets, but the target relaxation is capped at a maximum 5% to safeguard the integrity of the regulation.
The regulation applies to new passenger cars registered in the European Union and EEA member states for the first time. in Euro 6 (they were introduced at Euro 5 for conventional diesel cars), and they are numerically the same as those for diesel cars. The classifications for vehicle category are defined by:, Emission standards for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles are summarised in the following tables.
These limits supersede the original directive on emission limits 70/220/EEC.
