Many of the residents are recent immigrants with limited english proficiency and work blue color jobs so you can't really expect them to have tons of money. Although the schools are very big, they are also very cramped and very dirty as well, but they provide an adequate education. I made many friends, I have friends of different cultures. God Bless!….Thx. as far as safely we do have two police head-corers in town and our emergency medical service is amazing. And an NPR story that was written not too long ago talked about how gangs are taking over these once decent middle class suburbs of NYC. High school: 72% Drug stores: 1st. The neighborhood is nice but sometimes there are safety concerns. I have made and stayed good friends with some of my elementary friends who have been with me through good times and hard times. According to some who lived there in the 50's and 60's, it was actually a nice upper middle class area but by the 80's, it started becoming a bad area with an influx of gangs/gang activity and whatnot. I know our schools get a bad wrap but I truly believe all schools have their demons, besides the teachers in this district are amazing ad truly care for their students. I work in a public school as an aide. It has many parks where you could spend time with family. Yeah, things have been tough here, but, a combination of hard development work and cyclical boom have us on the rise in Utica. And, there’s a subsection on the Brownsville Wikipedia page that mentions the police. It’s not all gangs and violence that the news makes it seem, it’s civil and fun being apart of this community. uniondale is far from ghetto although some kids may want it to be so that Hempstead and Roosevelt wont consider it soft but looking at the many working class two parent homes in uniondale plus high graduation rates uniondale does not fit the description…i work in hempstead and uniondale school safety and trust me Hempstead and uniondale are worlds apart…and even hempstead doesn’t belong on the same note as south jamaica and brooklyn..i lived in bedstuy and south jamaica and hempstead is calm by comparison so the writer should revise this story. And, in doing so, are condemning the population that lives there.
I believe it is #1 or 2 on the worst cities over 100k over as the worst crime per capita and murder rate. Most of the people around this area are very nice, but since this is a dilapidated area with a lot of minorities and less police structure, it is a high area of crime. The inner city shopping experiences are in the top 20% – not the worst by far, but way up there. Graduate of Middletown HS. Additionally, high school graduation rates are determined by looking at the total number of people who live in a city, not the current graduation rate of an area’s high schools.
How do you decide if a place is ghetto or not? Instead of rating neighborhoods , you should actually go out and help our children get out of these so called “ghettos”. You can live anywhere and be cultured, creative and successful. , Newburgh is actually on the FBI’s top 10 list for the highest crime % cities in the U.S. Especially the South American parts , we have different Spanish cultures in Brentwood. If you give Poughkeepsie a Google, you’ll see many mentions from locals and former Vassar College students calling the place a ghetto, too. They have Monticello as number one and Middletown as number two but Newburgh as number 8. What is Mariah Carey all about….I don’t know anything about her as a person. The thing that bugs me the most is the use of the word “Downtown”. The extreme poverty of some places in the South and in the Appalachia would make any “inner city” look desirable. Newburgh has the 2nd highest number of high school dropouts in the state of New York, and as a result, income levels are just about as low as you can get as well. And the data backs that up. You guys are disgusting , last time I checked Uniondale is not even close to being ghetto.
Historic people who were born there & became legends. Culturally it is a rich neighborhood with a predominantly Hispanic population and a variety of small businesses it is comfortable for a person that looks for a little piece of their country here, the food is amazing and originally ethnic. These restaurants all bring something to this town, like having different foods creating even more diversity.
